
Sexual activity is a complex and vital part of human life that influences various aspects of physical health and emotional well-being. One of the critical influences of sexual activity is its effect on hormone levels, particularly testosterone and oestrogen. These hormones play significant roles in men and women, impacting everything from physical health and mood regulation to overall well-being.
When individuals engage in sexual activity, the process can lead to an increase in testosterone and oestrogen levels. Testosterone is mainly associated with male health, but it is also important in women, while oestrogen is typically considered a female hormone but is also essential for men (Hammes & Levin, 2019). Studies have shown that sexual activity can increase circulating testosterone, which has been associated with physical performance and enhanced energy levels (Handelsman et al., 2018). In women, testosterone levels can affect sexual desire and physical vitality, especially in times of sexual arousal (CUNNINGHAM et al., 2015).
On the other hand, oestrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining bone health in both sexes (CALEY, 2015). Both hormones are involved in metabolic functions that can influence weight and energy levels (Mauvais-Jarvis & Lindsey, 2024). Therefore, sexual activity, which increases testosterone and oestrogen, can have benefits for general physical health. This hormonal impulse can also help improve mood, which is vital in mental health. Studies suggest a connection between increased testosterone levels and enhanced humour and vitality in men (Davis et al., 2019).
In addition, sexual activity and its influence on hormone levels can be essential to immune function. The balance of sex hormones, including testosterone, can support immune responses, affecting general health (FOO et al., 2017). In stressful situations, hormone levels float significantly, often diminishing testosterone and potentially increasing anxiety (Van Anders et al., 2015). Involvement in sexual activity can help reduce stress levels by releasing endorphins, which are natural mood enhancers, thus stabilising hormone levels and improving mental well-being (Kranz et al., 2015).
However, while sexual activity can positively influence hormone levels, it is important to understand that environmental and behavioural factors can affect these changes. For example, regular exercises and a healthy lifestyle can lead to better hormonal balance, while stress and lack of sleep can interrupt hormone levels (Lee et al., 2025; Mcewen & Milner, 2017).
In conclusion, sexual activity plays a significant role in influencing testosterone and oestrogen levels, which may have broad implications for physical health, mood regulation, and general well-being. Sexual involvement increases hormones that promote not only better physical fitness but also enrich mental health. It is essential that individuals consider their hormonal health and how lifestyle choices affect their mood and physical health. Understanding this connection, people can better appreciate the complexity of human sexuality and its implications for health (DOS SANTOS et al., 2014; SCHULSTER et al., 2016; ELRAIYAH et al., 2014).
